When you lose teeth, shrinkage of the jawbone may cause your face to look older. Dental implants can stop this process.

Some commonly asked questions, and answers, about dental implants.

What are Dental implants?
They are small anchors of titanium, which is a biocompatible material, implanted and left to integrate naturally into the jawbone. They therefore take the place of the tooth root, and it is then possible to provide a replacement for missing teeth by attaching porcelain crowns or bridges, to these anchors.

Am I too old for implants?
Implants are suitable for all ages, post adolescence, as long as you are in reasonable health. An 80 year old patient could get twenty years plus continued or renewed function from the treatment. It really does give a renewed lease of life, as patients are able to better maintain a good diet, and feel more happy and confident.

Are Dental implants successful?
Implants have been used in treatment for over 35 years. Tests done on patients with implants over 5 yrs old have shown a success rate of nearly 95%.  More than five million patients have been treated world wide.

What are the advantages of implants over regular dentures?
Improved quality of life., appearance, speech, chewing, tasting, comfort, confidence…..
Being able to eat and chew normally, means improved systemic health and well being.

What are the costs involved?
Your dentist will give you a clear and full explanation of all your options and costs involved

Does ACC pay for implants?
Yes, if you are considered a suitable candidate ACC will contribute to the cost of implants, if your teeth are missing due to an accident.

Testimonials

Hello Paul

Here are a few words to say how glad I am, that I decided to have all my teeth replaced with implants.  The decision took a little while to make, but I am rewarded with teeth that feel like natural teeth, perform as natural teeth and look really good.

People tell me that they don’t look false and look like attractive natural teeth.  For the period I had to make do with upper false teeth and had to use the goo to more or less hold them in place, I found that I was very restricted in foods that I could eat satisfactorily, had lost taste sensations, couldn’t rely on the “teeth” staying put and looked awful when I took them out to clean.

I believe that the cost was really, really worth it and could not now imagine living with any other option.

Kind Regards

JC

Dear Paul

Well what can I say about my implants?  Well, they certainly have changed the way I see myself, and they were indeed worth every $$$ spent on them.  I can smile now without being horribly aware of gaps in my teeth due to having several of them extracted over the years.

My worst fear was always of having to wear a plate in my mouth if I wished to hide the gaps, but thanks to the implants there are now no gaps.  It is the same as having all my own teeth back again.  No ‘plate’ slipping in my mouth, no feeling of discomfort, simply a full complement of teeth.  At no stage do I need to be careful of what I eat I eat as the implants manage everything , just as normal teeth do.

It’s great to be able to laugh & smile without feeling embarrassed.

Yours Sincerely

Rebecca

Dear Paul
I had all my teeth removed in November 2004, a NOVUM implant lower inserted in same operation and six posts inserted in the top with top denture which I had to tolerate for 9 months.

I know now that I put up with my own poor teeth for too long.

From the first week I had no trouble with the lower implant, but I greatly dislike the top denture.  It was uncomfortable and I could neither taste nor talk adequately.

Since I have had both top and bottom bridges completed I can truthfully say that if I had to take the option of having dentures and a good new car (the extra cost of the implants) or an old dunga car and the implants, it would be a no-contest in favour of the implants.

I eat three times every day and now it’s a pleasure every time, AND I can eat anything.  It used to be a trial.

The efficiency, health benefits, taste and comfort cannot be compared.

Yours faithfully

BB

Grey Street Dental Surgery

The decision I made to have dental implants replace my dentures was not an easy one.  It took several years of agonising over whether or not I would be a suitable patient, after having lost my natural teeth some thirty-five years prior, and also what the overall investment might be worth to me.

It is almost three years since my first consultation with Paul Morris of Grey Street Dental Surgery.  Paul is the consummate professional.  He explained to me very clearly what the procedure involved.

It is now eighteen months on since the completion of the transplant procedure and I must say what a wonderful experience it has been for me.  I now have the ability to eat a decent steak or an apple properly, oral hygiene is much easier to maintain than before.  And also, and just as importantly, I have developed a much greater level of personal confidence.

Many thanks to Paul and his staff, Oral Surgeon Bruce Murdock and to the medical staff at Aorangi Hospital for making me feel at ease during my implant procedure.

Yours truly,

A very happy customer.

Dear Paul
......’man I could write an entire book on this subject!”.  After all, my first encounter with implants was in 1984, more than 20 years ago, and it has been something of an odyssey getting to where I am now.

I think the essential consideration is ‘what are your alternatives?’.  When I first had implants placed in my lower jaw the alternative was either a partial plate or a complete lower denture.  I was only 30 years old and the idea of having a denture was horrifying.  The partial plate was inhibiting and less than secure.

So, what I can say about the implant dentistry is that it provides the only real alternative to your own teeth if you are faced with not being able to retain your own teeth.  You could even argue I guess that what I have now is actually better than the real thing.  Certainly the implant dentistry I have had done has restored full use of my teeth and I’m no longer having to be careful about the type of foods I eat.  In this way it has added to my enjoyment and quality of life.

The decision I made has resulted in a hugely improved situation for me and I’m able to enjoy and appreciate that.  I guess there is one other thing I would say if someone were asking me about my experience, and that is to be sure to work with medical professionals who knows what they are doing and have the necessary skills and experience.  I’ve been fortunate enough to have been in the hands of professionals whilst this work has been undertaken, consequently the outcome is a positive one for me.

Kind Regards
