Local anaesthetic

print this page

An injection of local anaesthetic is the most commonly used pain relief for dental procedures. We most frequently use a lignocaine product with adrenaline. We can also offer you an adrenaline free product.

Please let us know if you have an allergy to any local anaesthetics, or would prefer an adrenaline free injection.

In some cases the local anaesthetic may not be as effective as we would like. This can occur in cases of severe infection or may be due to anatomical, pathological or psychological reasons. If you have had this happen before, or experience it during treatment, please let us know and we will explain your other treatment options to you.

Complications

There is a possibility that an injection may cause bruising to the face. This is usually slight and will disappear in a few days. In a few cases there may be some swelling associated with the bruising. There is also a possibility of numbness or tingling of the tongue, which can be caused by a needlestick injury. This is rare and it usually heals with time.

Please let us know if either of the above occur, and we will advise you of suitable treatment.
